"I'm just never getting there. I'm getting round to it. I'm beginning to understand it a bit more"

title quote from - Mark E. Smith, The Fall.

Did you recently wake up and think shit, where did all my spare time go? You still love going to gigs but there an increasingly large number of bands you haven't heard of...maybe you've even started buying CDs of bands of the 1980s that you only have on tape - in a vain effort to 'revive' your youth.

STOP RIGHT THERE!

Gen X Jukebox was set up by a like-minded group of post-young professionals trying to make a living whilst staying in touch with the "right" side of their brain.

Beggars - love it!

More here: http://beggarsband.com/

Ambulance Ltd...we still wait patiently

Probably one of the best bands ever to appear from NY and still no new album. Last due "fall 2007" but no doubt delayed again. It'll be worth the wait though... read more here:
http://www.ambulancenyc.com/ and listen to the track "Focus" from the forthcoming album. More here http://www.myspace.com/ambulanceltd

Kate Nash

Just picked up a copy of Kate Nash's album, bit belatedly (Polydor, 2007) - thanks Tim in Norfolk for the recommendations. Here's a YouTube vid of the hit "Foundations"

FabChannel & Calexico

The Paradiso Club in Amsterdam was one of the first to record and broadcast its live gigs over the internet. The site http://www.fabchannel.com/ is one of the best for reviewing live performances. A must for anyone wanting to check out a new band before digging into the cash...

As a taster, here's a recent concert by Calexico http://www.fabchannel.com/calexico_concert/2008-10-15. Be warned though, you may need a really fast internet connection. The quality is great but that's only good enough if you have the hardware.

If you're more than a little but interested in Calexico, you can download huge amounts of live here: http://www.archive.org/details/calexico2006-12-02..flac16

Spiritualized

After a near-death experience and spell in intensive care, Spiritualized is back with "Songs in A & E". Here's a track, "Soul on Fire" from this fantastic album!

Here'a s live version:

There are three other live tracks...http://www.brightcove.tv/title.jsp?title=1329243270&channel=1155246428

Oh Laura

Heard this band on RRR the other day "Oh Laura" ... bit country for my liking but nice vocals. Here's a live version of a new single called "release me".

Long Blondes New Album - Couples

The Long Blondes second album "Couples" appeared on the shelves on 7 April (god, don't you love UK spring-time for new releases!).

This band from Sheffield first appeared on the airwaves in 2004 then took what seemed to be an age to release their first album "Someone to Drive You Home", which was certainly worth the wait - one of the best first albums I've ever heard.

The second album doesn't disappoint. Also published on Rough Trade, it's a bit of a departure on the first album so anyone who hasn't heard these guys (mostly gals), I'd recommend buying both.

A session recorded for London's XFM can be found here

Here's a video for the opening track on the new album...it's called Century.

Ambulance LTD

This enigmatic New York band were widely acclaimed for their first album "LP" and have since produced two fantastic EPs. The Ambulance LTD website includes a preview of the song Focus off the forthcoming album but the deadline of autumn 2007 seems to have slipped. Anyway, the band are apparently working with Velvet Underground's Cale on the production. Their Myspace site features a demo of Ladyfingers which I think is on the new album.

Here's a live performance of Heavy Lifting off the album "LP".

Malcolm Middleton's new album

Published on Chemikal Underground records, this is the second album from the former member of Arab Stap. Three tracks from the album "Into the Woods" can be heard in full at the Last FM website, including this one called A Brighter Beat.

Radar Bros New Album

25 February saw release of "Auditorium", the third album from the Californian band Radar Bros on Chemikal Underground records in Glasgow.

Here's the video of the opening track When Cold Air Goes to Sleep

Portishead - Third Album

Portishead's first album "Dummy" was published in 1994. It then took another three years to come up with a name for their second album "Portishead". Anyone who thinks they'd be disappointed by the sheer ordinariness of their third album title needn't be...after another 11 years of thought their third album is called...you guessed it "Third". Fortunately, Portishead are primarily musicians and that is all we need worry about.

Here's a taster. The album "Third" will be published on CD on 28 April. This song is called The Rip and its lovely:

Also off the third album
Machine Gun
Magic Doors
Hunter
We Carry On

God Save The Clientele

The Clientele are one of those bands that really gets under your skin...in a good way. Their new fourth album "God Save the Clientele" came out last October on Track and Field Records. The following track Bookshop Casanova is number twelve.

This is the opening track from their third album, "Strange Geometry".

Emma Pollock Debut Album

This is the first album from the lead singer songwriter of the Delgados, after they tragically split up following their Melbourne (Australia) gig a couple of years back.

The album "Watch the Fireworks" was published on 4AD in August 2007.

The Fall - 50 Year Old Men

You know who you are...here's a gem from the new album “Imperial Wax Solvent”
by The Fall. The track is called 50 Year Old Man.

The Breeders New Album

Mountain Battles was released 7 April on Matador records.

Here is the track Bang On played live:

There are free previews of the rest of the album tracks here.

The new British Sea Power Album

British Sea Power's latest installment Do You Like Rock Music has as much in common with their first album The Decline of British Sea Power as it does with the epic Open Season. The new album was released on Rough Trade Records on 14 January 2008.

Another great album from surely one of the greatest bands of the new millennium. The video for "No Lucifer" even comes with karaoke-style subtitles and freakish characters to scare your kids.

Better still, here they are performing tracks from the new album live on Later with Jools Holland...Fantastic! Here is NO Lucifer, featuring (according to British Sea Power themselves), a fantasy Cumbrian wrestling display.
